Helping to keep your data safe

The ICO can issue fines of up to £500,000 for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act and Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations.

Keeping your data safe

Organisations can be prosecuted for failing to comply with the terms of the Data Protection Act.

Whether you run a large business, a SME, a charity, a school, an NHS Trust or any other type of Public Sector or Private Sector organisation, the Data Protection Act (1998) obliges you to ensure:-

"Appropriate technical and organisational measures shall be taken against unauthorized or unlawful processing of personal data and against accidental loss or destruction of, or damage to, personal data".

Even if your stored data is not of a personal nature, it is likely to be commercially sensitive and in addition to the threat of prosecution, there are other potentially damaging ramifications of sensitive data falling into the wrong hands, such as damage to reputation, weakened ability to compete in the market place and crippling financial losses.

What is Degaussing?

Degaussing takes its meaning from Johann Gauss (1777-1855) a mathematician who studied and worked on electro-magnetic fields. It is used today to describe the process of erasing magnetic media i.e., removing from that media, remnants of previously recorded signals.

Data is stored in magnetic media, such as hard drives, floppy disks, and magnetic tape, by making very small areas called magnetic domains change their magnetic alignment to be in the direction of an applied magnetic field. Degaussing magnetic media leaves the domains in random patterns with no preference to orientation, thereby rendering previous data unrecoverable. A Degausser is therefore used to completely erase all data from magnetically storage media.

Degaussing is effective in a range of industries and organisations such as Banks, Insurance, Government Departments, and Legal Firms etc.

Simply overwriting magnetic media does not permanently erase data. Only a Degausser can remove data 100% and ensure that confidential data is safely, securely and permanently erased.
